Skin Health is a UAE skin cancer awareness initiative and endorsed by the UAE Ministry of Health.
Launched in September 2014 and remained active until the end of 2016, Skin Health is the first of its kind in the UAE that seeks to increase awareness about the prevention, early detection, signs and symptoms, and treatment of skin cancer. The initiative aims to educate the public and healthcare professionals about the disease which is an ‘under-recognised overachiever’ – being one of the most common but least understood health concerns in the Middle East.
Skin Health encourages a sun-safe lifestyle. Skin cancer can present itself up to 10 – 15 years after initial skin damage from the sun, so it is essential that people are educated and aware of what to look for, and continuously check themselves for any signs or symptoms. According to the UN World Health Organisation (WHO), between 2 and 3 million non-melanoma skin cancers and 132,000 melanoma skin cancers occur globally each year. However, skin cancer is also highly treatable if detected early, with a cure rate of up to 100%.
